Isla Mujeres se ubica en el Mar Caribe, muy cerca de la Península de Yucatán, al sureste de México. La isla constituye parte de uno de los ocho municipios del Estado de Quintana Roo, el municipio de Isla Mujeres (que incluye parte de territorio continental) y se ubica a trece kilómetros de la ciudad de Cancún, el principal polo turístico de la región. Esta ínsula tiene una longitud de aproximadamente 7 km de largo y 650 m la parte más ancha. La población es de cerca 15,000 habitantes. Isla Mujeres es el primer punto dentro de la republica Mexicana donde salen y se ocultan los rayos del sol.
En tiempos prehispánicos la isla estaba consagrada a Ixchel, diosa maya de la Luna, el amor y la fertilidad, la cual recibía ofrendas con formas femeninas que los creyentes depositaban en sus playas. Al llegar los conquistadores españoles y observar las figuras, la bautizaron como Isla Mujeres. Al sur de la isla se alza un faro maya, uno de los pocos edificios precolombinos que sobrevivieron a la destrucción de los conquistadores.
Éste es un lugar con historia y playas espectaculares. En la punta sur de la isla hay vestigios de un templo maya. Los arqueólogos saben que Isla Mujeres fue un santuario dedicado a Ixchel, diosa maya de la fertilidad y que las mujeres mayas debían hacer un peregrinaje a la isla como parte de su paso de niña a mujer. Hoy, el peregrinaje a la isla lo llevan a cabo los amantes de los animales marinos y de la belleza de su naturaleza tropical. Isla Mujeres fue también refugio y hogar de famosos piratas realmente tratantes de esclavos como Fermin Mundaca de Marecheaga.
Isla Mujeres is the name of a small island, as well as the town on that island, a short distance off the coast of the northeast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea. Isla Mujeres is also one of the eight municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is about 13 km northeast of Cancún. The island is some 7 km long and 650 meters wide. It has a population around of 15,000. Isla Mujeres is the first point inside of Mexico with the sunrise and subset.
In Pre-Columbian times the island was sacred to the Mayan moon goddess, Ixchel. When the Spanish arrived here in the 16th century they named it "Isla Mujeres" meaning "Island of Women" because of the many cult images of the moon goddess here. There was a small Mayan temple on the south tip of the island, however in 1988 Hurricane Gilbert caused extensive damage to it, leaving most of the foundation and a very small portion of the temple.
Die Isla Mujeres, zu deutsch Insel der Frauen, ist eine Insel an der mexikanischen Karibikküste im Bundesstaat Quintana Roo. Die Isla Mujeres liegt etwa 13 km nördlich des Ferienorts Cancun. Sie ist ca. 7 km lang und hat etwa 15.000 Einwohner. Haupterwerbsquelle ist der Tourismus. Die Insel hat eine Ausdehnung von etwa 7 km Länge und 650 Meter Breite. Mit dem Festland ist die Insel über Schnellfähren verbunden, die in Puerto Juarez starten. Isla Mujeres ist das erste Point wo der Sonnenaufgang und Sonnenuntergang in Mexico ansehen konnen wird.
Die Insel wurde schon seit 550 v. Chr. von den Maya genutzt. Zu dieser Zeit war die Insel allerdings nicht dauerhaft besiedelt, sondern auf ihr befand sich ein Heiligtum zu Ehren der Mayagöttin Ixchel. Der spanische Konquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba entdecke die Insel im März 1517. Während des Krieges der Kasten im Jahre 1850 wurde die Insel von rebellierenden Maya eingenommen.
